# Notes Toward an Ascent
*A play in 7 scenes*
**CHARACTERS:** Sennar Vale (Creator / Trickster), Ijeoma Rho (Sage / Hero), Anselm Corr (Destroyer), Lian Marou (Lover), Teoma Vess (Magician), Sault Vane (Creator, inflated — the Perfectionist)
*The structure ascends. Three axes at the start, seven at the end, or one seen from far enough away. Nothing that can be measured on one level survives to the next.*
---
## ACT ONE
### SCENE I
[THE THREE-CELL. Three axes, no more. The structure has begun to lose the load it was built to carry. The envelope is decay.]
[Sennar Vale releases the last support and does not reach to catch it.]
**SENNAR VALE**
What I make is the only part of me that counts. You're standing in it.
**ANSELM CORR**
Then let it lose the load. That's the only time a structure tells the truth.
[The controlled demolition — Sennar Vale and Anselm Corr prove each other's limit; each is the exact wall the other was built to find. This is where the work happens, and it is not stable, and that is why.]
**LIAN MAROU**
Stay in the shape we made. It fits. Why would you leave a thing that fits?
(Lights shift. A fourth axis opens where there was none.)
### SCENE II
[THE FOLD. Four axes now; the room turns through a direction that was always there and never available. The envelope is impulse.]
[Ijeoma Rho arrives at the exact hour the work was finished, as if summoned by its completion.]
**IJEOMA RHO**
It arrived at the exact hour. That's how I knew it was real — and that I'd been asleep.
**SENNAR VALE**
I break the frame because someone has to. I'm the only one they let do it.
[Co-constitution — Ijeoma Rho and Sennar Vale are not two events. Remove either and nothing happened. Ask which came first and the question falls apart in your hand.]
**TEOMA VESS**
I can make the gap look like a door. Whether it *is* one is a different craft.
(Lights shift.)
### SCENE III
[THE FOLD, deeper. The far wall is closer than the near wall; distance has stopped agreeing with itself. The envelope is interval.]
[Ijeoma Rho looks directly at the thing everyone has been not-seeing.]
**IJEOMA RHO**
I need to see what's actually the case. Not knowing is how I was caught out.
**ANSELM CORR**
I'm not here to save it. I'm here to find where it ends.
[The productive antagonism — Ijeoma Rho and Anselm Corr, again: the one who must see and the one who must break, and the break is how she finally sees.]
**SENNAR VALE**
Nothing I keep is real. Only the part I let go of.
[The mi–fa interval, near four-tenths of the way. The enthusiasm is spent and the skill has not arrived. Without a deadline with a witness attached — a scarcity that makes the argument unaffordable — the ascent quietly becomes a *different* ascent, and no one will have chosen it.]
(A long pause. Then: the dimension increments, unwitnessed.)
---
## ACT TWO
### SCENE IV
[THE NULL-CHAMBER. Five axes. A structured gap: nothing occurs here and everything is different on the far side of it. The envelope is oscillation.]
[Lian Marou holds perfectly still, and the stillness is the argument.]
**LIAN MAROU**
We don't have to become anything. We already match. Isn't that the whole of it?
**SENNAR VALE**
It fits because neither of us grew. That's not a fit. That's a splint.
[The stable orbit — Lian Marou and Sennar Vale, need meeting need with nothing left over, which is comfort, which is arrest. This is the bond the ascent has to cost him.]
**IJEOMA RHO**
I'll carry the change. Someone has to be the one it costs, and I've decided it's me.
(Lights shift.)
### SCENE V
[THE NULL-CHAMBER, its far face. Five axes folding toward a sixth. Something here is the same shape as Sennar, at a height he has not earned and will not survive. The envelope is ramp.]
[Sault Vane refines an object that is already finished, and has been finished for a very long time.]
**SAULT VANE**
Nothing leaves my hands until it's right. Nothing has ever left my hands.
**SENNAR VALE**
Tell me you're not what I turn into.
**SAULT VANE**
You are what I would be — if you ever stopped forgiving yourself the flaw.
[Recognition-horror — Sault Vane and Sennar Vale are one person with the restraint removed. Not an opposite. A prophecy wearing your own face.]
**TEOMA VESS**
I can hold the door open. I can't make him walk through his own.
(A long pause. Then: dark.)
---
## ACT THREE
### SCENE VI
[THE HORIZON GALLERY. Six axes; the walls are made of every version the collapse did not take. The envelope is release.]
[Sennar Vale opens his hands. The work leaves them, unfinished, and does not come back.]
**SENNAR VALE**
Then take it now. Before it's right. It was never going to be right.
**IJEOMA RHO**
I see you. Not the work — *you*. That was the part you thought didn't count.
[Witness — Ijeoma Rho marks Sennar Vale, and in the marking he becomes something that is not only what he made. The diffuse becomes definite. It cannot be undone.]
**ANSELM CORR**
There. It broke. Now watch what it was holding up.
[The si–do interval, near eight-tenths. It is almost complete, and to complete it is to become responsible for it, so the refining would go on forever. Shock required: release. It has to leave his hands still wanting one more pass.]
(Lights shift. The sixth axis resolves into a seventh.)
### SCENE VII
[THE POINT AT INFINITY. Seven axes, or one seen from far enough away. The old certainties have dissolved; nothing here can be measured by what came before. The envelope is decay, arriving finally at rest.]
[Sennar Vale and Ijeoma Rho stand at the same height. Neither is where they began. The level has moved.]
**SENNAR VALE**
I built the part of me you're standing in. And then I stopped standing in it too.
**IJEOMA RHO**
It arrived at the exact hour. It always does. That was never luck.
[Co-constitution, completed — Sennar Vale and Ijeoma Rho, the maker and the one who sees the making, each the other's proof, neither an event alone. The strange loop closes: follow the cause and you return to the start, one dimension up.]
**ANSELM CORR**
Don't rebuild it. If you build it again, build it to fall.
(A long pause. Then: not dark. Everything, at a higher order, still lit.)
**END**
---
[What this leaves open: Ascent · Witness · Interval. What it closes, for now: Collapse.]
