Notes Toward a Recurrence

A play in 7 scenes

CHARACTERS: Cassius Hallam (Innocent), Anwen Kwan (Destroyer), Mara Hallam (Explorer), Otis Rieke (Caregiver), Nadia Marchetti (Destroyer)

ACT ONE

SCENE I

[THE RIVERBANK. the same again, non-identically. The envelope is step.]

[Cassius Hallam folds, all at once.]

CASSIUS HALLAM

It doesn’t have to mean what you think it means.

ANWEN KWAN

You keep patching it, Cassius. I’d rather it finally broke.

[The holy terror — Between Cassius Hallam and Anwen Kwan sits the truth that razes the house — said, or shown, by whichever of them still believes it needs saying.]

NADIA MARCHETTI

Something has to end before something else can start.

(Lights shift.)

SCENE II

[THE STAIRWELL. slow change beneath the threshold of notice. The envelope is impulse.]

[Anwen Kwan finds the missing piece without reaching for it.]

ANWEN KWAN

It should have fallen down years ago.

OTIS RIEKE

I’m not asking what it costs me. I’m asking what you need.

[Unmarked contact — Anwen Kwan and Otis Rieke have no charted relation — which doesn’t mean nothing happens, only that no one has mapped it yet. Anwen Kwan drives toward end what should not be allowed to continue; Otis Rieke fears being needed by no one. That is the unmarked territory between them.]

NADIA MARCHETTI

Don’t thank me for it. Just don’t rebuild it the same way.

(Lights shift.)

SCENE III

[THE STAIRWELL. continuity breaks. The envelope is interval.]

[Mara Hallam finds the missing piece without reaching for it.]

MARA HALLAM

I can’t do this from inside a room.

CASSIUS HALLAM

Tell me it isn’t what it looks like.

[Unmarked contact — Mara Hallam and Cassius Hallam have no charted relation — which doesn’t mean nothing happens, only that no one has mapped it yet. Mara Hallam drives toward stay unowned; find the real thing; Cassius Hallam fears punishment for having done wrong. That is the unmarked territory between them.]

NADIA MARCHETTI

You keep patching it, Mara. I’d rather it finally broke.

[The mi–fa interval. Without a scarcity that makes the argument unaffordable., this turns into something else entirely.]

(A long pause. Then: dark.)

ACT TWO

SCENE IV

[A PARKED CAR. one line becomes two. The envelope is oscillation.]

[Otis Rieke goes back to an old, smaller self, right there.]

OTIS RIEKE

Somebody has to hold it together. It’s going to be me.

MARA HALLAM

There’s a version of me that’s still free. I’d like to go find her.

[Chronic grief — One of Otis Rieke and Mara Hallam leaves and the other waits, on a schedule neither of them chose, and neither is wrong about it.]

NADIA MARCHETTI

Something has to end before something else can start.

(Lights shift.)

SCENE V

[THE WAITING ROOM. continuity breaks. The envelope is decay.]

[Nadia Marchetti changes chairs. Nothing else changes.]

NADIA MARCHETTI

Something has to end before something else can start.

CASSIUS HALLAM

Tell me it isn’t what it looks like.

[The holy terror — Between Nadia Marchetti and Cassius Hallam sits the truth that razes the house — said, or shown, by whichever of them still believes it needs saying.]

OTIS RIEKE

Let me. Just — let me carry this part.

(A long pause. Then: dark.)

SCENE VI

[THE OFFICE, AFTER HOURS. one line becomes two. The envelope is ramp.]

[Cassius Hallam folds, all at once.]

CASSIUS HALLAM

It doesn’t have to mean what you think it means.

MARA HALLAM

If I stay for this, I stay for everything after it too.

[Unmarked contact — Cassius Hallam and Mara Hallam have no charted relation — which doesn’t mean nothing happens, only that no one has mapped it yet. Cassius Hallam drives toward reach a state where nothing is wrong; Mara Hallam fears entrapment; a life chosen for me. That is the unmarked territory between them.]

ANWEN KWAN

Something has to end before something else can start.

[The si–do interval. It has to be released now, unfinished, or it never will be.]

(Lights shift.)

ACT THREE

SCENE VII

[THE ATTIC. continuity breaks. The envelope is decay.]

[Anwen Kwan changes chairs. Nothing else changes.]

ANWEN KWAN

Don’t thank me for it. Just don’t rebuild it the same way.

NADIA MARCHETTI

Don’t thank me for it. Just don’t rebuild it the same way.

[Mirror — Anwen Kwan and Nadia Marchetti are the same shape at the same height, which is its own kind of trouble — neither can show the other anything new.]

OTIS RIEKE

I’m not asking what it costs me. I’m asking what you need.

(Lights shift.)

END

[What this leaves open: Emergence · Bifurcation · Interval. What it closes, for now: Recurrence.]

COUPLING ENGINE — arc

COORDINATES

Person: Creator · level 7 (Alchemist) · Trickster · Integrated Phenomenon: #13 Collapse · Decay envelope · Teleological · Actual Coupling: capacity 6 / demand 6 / gap 0 / blind

THE WOUND — A CONCLUSION, NOT AN EVENT

“what I make is the only part of me that counts.” They hold it without being run by it — which costs something continuously, and is why they are tired.

THE MEETING

What arrives is Collapse: structure loses load-bearing capacity. Its envelope is decay — exponential falloff; predictable half-life. Its causal signature is teleological — organised by an attractor ahead, not a push behind. It reaches them by way of boredom with their own pattern, watched running for the fourth time. In this configuration they occupy the position of Trickster: they breaks the frame; is the only one permitted to.

LAW OF THREE — FORCE COUNT

Active: make a thing that will outlast the making Passive: mediocrity; empty execution Reconciling: a scarcity that makes the argument unaffordable Two forces produce a condition, not an event. If the scene will not move, the reliable finding is not that one force is too weak — it is that there are two. The third force is almost never a party to the conflict.

TRANSFORMATION CHAIN

1T1 Integrationacquires the capacity that was missing. Relief, and a strange unearned competence. 2T6 Ascentthe level moves. Disorientation; the old certainties dissolve.

LAW OF SEVEN — INTERVAL SHOCKS

mi–fa · around 40% Enthusiasm spent, competence not yet acquired. Left alone the process becomes a different process without anyone deciding. Shock required: a deadline with a witness attached to it. si–do · around 85% Nearly complete; completing it would mean becoming responsible for the result, so refinement becomes permanent. Shock required: release. It has to leave their hands feeling unfinished.

ADJACENT POSSIBLE

Opens: Interval · Inversion Closes: Crystallization Rule: Collapse cannot reach Crystallization directly — an Interval is mandatory. Anything that skips it is a reaction wearing the costume of a decision.

INTERWEAVING

Second phenomenon: #15 Crystallization — the diffuse becomes definite Visible link: Strange looping — following the causation returns you to the start, one level up Unseen link: Co-constitution — neither is an event without the other; asking which came first is malformed Note: One mechanism should be legible to the people inside it and one should not. The unseen one is what the ending reveals.

COLLISIONS

Collusion: Lover — mutual need perfectly met, growth arrested on both sides. Stable, which is the problem. This is the relationship the arc has to cost them. Catalysis: Destroyer — productive antagonism; each proves the other’s limit. Unstable, and where the work actually happens. Recognition-horror: Creator, inflated pole, at level 6 — the Perfectionist. Not an opposite: the same person with the restraint removed. “You are what I would be.”

COORDINATES

Person: Sage · level 7 (Alchemist) · Hero · Integrated Phenomenon: #20 Interval · Decay envelope · Deterministic · Contested Coupling: capacity 7 / demand 6 / gap -1 / neutral

THE WOUND — A CONCLUSION, NOT AN EVENT

“not knowing is how I was caught out.” They hold it without being run by it — which costs something continuously, and is why they are tired.

THE MEETING

What arrives is Interval: the structured gap; nothing happens, everything changes. Its envelope is decay — exponential falloff; predictable half-life. Its causal signature is deterministic — fully fixed by antecedents. Because the phenomenon is contested rather than actual, it costs an extra level simply to register. Below that, it does not reach them at all. It reaches them by way of aesthetic shock — the piece of work that arrives at the exact hour. In this configuration they occupy the position of Hero: they carries the cost of the change.

LAW OF THREE — FORCE COUNT

Active: see what is actually the case Passive: being deceived; deceiving myself Reconciling: a change of medium — the same conflict conducted in writing, or in public Two forces produce a condition, not an event. If the scene will not move, the reliable finding is not that one force is too weak — it is that there are two. The third force is almost never a party to the conflict.

INTERWEAVING

Second phenomenon: #18 Witness — the event of being seen, marked, named Visible link: Co-constitution — neither is an event without the other; asking which came first is malformed Unseen link: Braiding — they alternate until neither can be told without the other Note: One mechanism should be legible to the people inside it and one should not. The unseen one is what the ending reveals.

COLLISIONS

Collusion: Magician — mutual need perfectly met, growth arrested on both sides. Stable, which is the problem. This is the relationship the arc has to cost them. Catalysis: Destroyer — productive antagonism; each proves the other’s limit. Unstable, and where the work actually happens. Recognition-horror: Sage, inflated pole, at level 6 — the Dogmatist. Not an opposite: the same person with the restraint removed. “You are what I would be.”
